Rudolph Wittschack
was born on November 27, 1919 in Middle Island. He was the son of
Meta (Sietas) and Rudoph Wittschack Sr. He grew up in Coram, and
attended the Coram elementary school. Before entering the service,
he was employed by Elsebough’s movers as a truck driver in Port
Jefferson. Wittschack was inducted into the army on April 8, 1942 at
Camp Upton in Yaphank. Wittschack was sent to Europe where he served
in the Army Air Force as a tail gunner. He was promoted to corporal
and later in March of 1943 to the rank of sergeant. He was declared
missing in action on June 26, 1944. He was presumed dead on February
20, 1946.
