Edwin G. Mooney was born on July 23, 1922 in Brooklyn, New York. He
was the son of Francis J. Mooney, and Louise St. Amand. Before the
war he was self employed as a carpenter. Mooney enlisted in the Navy
in 1942 and served as a motor machinist’s mate at the University of
Illinois. In May 1943 he was assigned to the USS LY, where he served
as a chief motor machinist mate 1st class. The USS
LY was assigned duty in North Africa, Sicily and Salerno. In
September 1944, Mooney was assigned to the USS Chilton and was
sent to the Pacific where he
participated in the liberation of the Philippine's and at Okinawa in
1945.
Mooney received the
European Theatre medal with 2 stars, the Pacific Theater with 2
stars, and one star for Okinawa. He also received a good conduct
medal. He was discharged from the Navy on November 27, 1945 at Lido
Beach, New York.
